The private investigative industry in Texas is regulated by the Texas Department of Public Saftey Private Security Bureau a licensing division  of Texas state government.  Most states have legislative rules and regulations governing private investigators. These laws are intended to protect the citizenry and to insure prospective PI applicants meet and satisfy state licensing requirements. 
Private investigative associations aid the industry by providing educational and training forums for private investigators to continually sharpen their skills.
Texas Private Security Bureau has manditory continuing education certification programs for their license's.
Private investigator's may earn a special distinction for a particular investigative specialty.
